SUMMER READING REQUIREMENTS
Required Supplemental Reading: After signing an honesty statement verifying that each book was read, students
will be given a test on each required book during the first week of school. If a test is not passed, a book report will be
due on that book by the end of the first quarter. The report must follow the required format for book reports (see
attached) and illustrate that the student has successfully read the book. If the student fails to complete a passing report,
the student will fail the course for that quarter.
If a test for a second book is not passed in the first week of school, a report on that book will be due the last week of
the second quarter marking period. If a test for a third book was not passed, a report on that book will be due the last
week of the third marking period quarter. If the student fails to complete a passing report for either of those quarters, he
will fail the course for that quarter.

Reading Hints for Success:
1) Plan ahead how many pages to read each day to complete the reading on time. Write the start and
finish dates on the calendar.
2) Reluctant Readers: divide the book into 10 - 15 page daily segments with sticky notes so reading the
entire book isn't overwhelming.
3) Read early in the day to be alert and to have a short "to do" list for the day.
4) While reading, keep index cards in the book to take notes on character names and important events.
Refer to these cards while
reading to clarify how characters are related and use these cards to study the week of the tests.
Book Report Format:
All students should follow the following book report format:
1 ½ to 2 handwritten pages (in cursive using blue or black ink) that include:
Introductory Paragraph (title, author, and main theme or idea of book)
Body (a summary of the plot- or for a book of the Bible, write a summary of several parts of the
book which support your introductory statement of theme) - Use at least one quote!
Conclusion (the final events that resolve the main conflict or problem of the story - or for
a book of the Bible, summarize the main points in the body)
Evaluation (how is the reader better or wiser for reading this? or what part did you really enjoy?
or what questions did the author not answer for you?)
